The book chronicles Vickrey’s youth\, a period in which he had few Black friends\, an epiphany about race which he had while at Auburn University\, to his becoming a civil rights advocate early in his career\, including in Florida higher education and then at the University of Montevallo. The book describes his friendship with George Wallace\, whose racial policies Vickrey opposed\, and more.
